When to Worry: Bilirubin Levels

Are you familiar with the medical condition known as Jaundice? You may be somewhat familiar with it, but it also may be more common than you think. Jaundice can often cause a yellow tint to the skin that can even be noticeable in white sections of a person’s eyes. Did you know this ailment is common in newborns at birth? Sometimes it is higher than normal and a condition known as Hyperbilirubinemia.

Jaundice in Newborns

High bilirubin levels can lead to many health complications such as organ failure and brain damage. Bilirubin levels between 10-20 mg/Dl is “concerning” and higher than 20mg/dL is a serious condition. This health concern can now easily be prevented and in a way more convenient too.

The last thing you want to hear is that your newborn baby has a medical condition, but new technology has made this more manageable than ever. Traditionally, high bilirubin levels extend a baby’s stay at the hospital to receive treatment under bulky lights. This not only means a delayed discharge date but also higher medical bills for an extended hospital stay. A biliblanket is a device that has become the answer to this and a popular choice among physicians.

The biliblanket is actually not really a blanket at all.  There is a small metal box that powers the unit and plugs into the wall. Long flexible tubing connects to a belt or “wand” that emits ultraviolet light. The belt is wrapped around the baby’s stomach and back. This allows effective exposure to reduce bilirubin levels quickly without being invasive or intrusive to care by the parents.
