When to Wear Your Back Brace

While there is some conflicting information out there on when to wear a back brace, there are a few general rules of thumb that you can follow to ensure you are getting the most out of your back brace. Some sources state to wear the brace as little as possible, while others state there is little harm is wearing it throughout the day.

The best thing you can do in this situation is to listen to the advice of your healthcare provider. Your doctor will be able to help you get a plan in place so you can get the most out of your back brace.

Definitely Wear a Back Brace

While lifting heavy objects — If you frequently lift heavy loads, you may consider a back brace to assist your core in stabilizing your spine. Remember to spare your spine by hinging at the hips and bending from your knees opposed to bending from your back. Lifting with your back can cause pain and injury.

While sitting for long periods of time — You should wear your back brace if you are sedentary for long hours; this will help you maintain correct posture and result in less tension in your lower back. When we sit, we tend to slump in a forward head and rounded shoulders position, because it’s easy. The problem is we’re hanging off our joints, which can place excessive strain on our tendons and ligaments especially when sitting for prolonged periods.

While wearing a back brace, your spine will be properly supported while you remain sitting or even standing for long periods of time. Ultimately, the best rule of thumb is to avoid prolonged sitting. A simple tip is to get up out of your chair and briefly move your body for every 30 minutes you spend sitting.

While recovering from injury or surgery — If you are injured, consult your doctor about when to wear a back brace. If you are recovering from surgery, the doctor will most likely provide you with this information in a discharge plan. Make sure to follow your doctor’s instructions; your physician may require that you wear the brace 24 hours for a while, or may simply require you to wear the brace when you feel you need it.

Don’t Overuse Your Brace

Remember a back brace supplements the muscles of your back and provides support and comfort when needed. Be cautious about becoming dependent on a back brace or overusing it. Your back brace could become a detriment if worn too often or against the advice of your doctor.

Your back brace is best to be used as an adjunct to a physical rehabilitation and strength training program. When in pain and recovering from injury, your brace can make otherwise difficult and painful daily tasks much more tolerable. Like crutches, your back brace should only be used as needed.
