Should I Sleep With My Back Brace?

Back braces are beneficial devices that help you complete daily tasks like walking, lifting, bending or twisting when you suffer from back pain. It’s common to wear your brace most of the day. Should the brace be worn at night while you sleep?

The short answer to whether you should sleep in a back brace is no. 

There are some situations and conditions where you might sleep in a back brace. Some scoliosis braces are only worn at night. Other people experience sharp pain when they roll over at night, and the pain wakes them up. A back brace helped them sleep. If you are going to sleep in your back brace, be sure to consider these guidelines.

How to Sleep in a Back Brace

  • Keep the brace over any night clothing.
  • Most braces do have Velcro® straps that could irate your skin if exposed by direct contact.
  • Make sure you position your body properly when getting into and out of bed.
  • Training may be provided on safely using your back brace. Make sure you know the proper way to go from a sitting position to lying down and then getting back up again.
  • Be aware of how you sleep. Whatever position helps you feel most comfortable to get optimal rest — regardless of using your brace or not — is the best sleeping position for you.
  • Using a back brace safely and correctly is extremely important to ensure you do not add to the damage the brace in working to correct. If you move a lot in your sleep, or get up and walk around while sleeping wearing the back brace at night may not be safe for you.
  • Make sure your back stays cool and dry while you wear the back brace at night.
  • You want to avoid moisture and sweat while you wear the back brace to keep the risk of skin ulcers low.

Don’t Sleep in a Back Brace if

  • Wear your back brace if you have any discomfort when lying down.
  • The back brace is supposed to help relieve pain, not cause any. So if you are not comfortable lying down with it on your body, it will be best to sleep without it.
  • Sleep in your back brace if you experience sleep apnea or trouble breathing when you lay down. The added constriction may make you feel suffocated.
  • Use a pillow as additional support while sleeping in your back brace.
  • The back brace provides the support you need. Adding a pillow may overextend your back and cause more pain. (However, you may add a pillow under or between your knees to reduce discomfort).
  • Spend any more time than necessary in the bed or lying down.
  • A back brace strengthens your back. Lying down inhibits the benefits of the brace, so you should avoid time in bed while wearing your brace.
