Signs You May Need a Back Brace

Back braces offer so many benefits — from pain relief to healing, not to mention the stabilization of weakened areas caused by surgery, the positives to wearing a brace far outweigh any negatives. Between 60 – 80% of adults in the U.S have reported lower back pain at some point in their lives. This type of back pain is a leading cause of other issues and disabilities that occur later in life. But how do you know if you need a brace?

Warning signs that you need a brace

Signs that indicate you may need a back brace include:

  • Severe back pain
  • Pain in your lower spine (front, sides or back)
  • Stubborn, deep muscle contractions near your spine (especially in the lower back)
  • Dowager’s hump (improper posture)
  • Loss of height. This can be as much as 6 inches
  • Weakness in your back or back muscles
  • Difficulty bending, walking or lifting
  • Numbness
  • Tingling or even a knife-like stabbing sensation
  • Curvature of the spine
  • Weakness in your legs and or feet

Your likelihood of needing a back brace increases if you are:

  • Pregnant
  • Overweight
  • Inactive
  • Over 30
  • Involved in situations that include lifting, bending, twisting
  • Subject to extended body vibrations (lots of driving, sandblasting, etc)
  • Excessively stressed or depressed

Take careful note if you are experiencing any of these symptoms. Back pain varies from person to person, and it ranges from mild to severe, so its important to pay attention to even the smallest signs that your body is trying to convey. Your next move will be to contact your doctor and figure out the root of your symptoms, and seek treatment.
