Man prepared for Operation Safe Driver Week

Are You Prepared For Operation Safe Driver Week?

Honk if you love safety, because Operation Safe Driver Week is here! Truckers all across the nation will be evaluated for their driving practices from July 15th to July 21! But what if truck drivers are unsafe because they’re exhausted due to sleep apnea?

We know that drivers all across the nation take safety for themselves and other motorists extremely seriously, but if they’re suffering from sleep apnea they might not even know it. Stop distracted driving by waking up to the dangers of filling our highways!

Are You Prepared For Operation Safe Driver Week?

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) teamed up with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), provincial and local law enforcement, and the trucking industry to launch the Operation Safe Driver campaign in order to make the roads safer.

According to the CVSA, 83% of semi truck accidents are caused by distracted driving. That’s why bears (cops) will be out this week in Canada, the United States, and Mexico to inspect vehicles and drivers.

They will be looking for seat belt violations, tailgating, texting while driving, failure to obey traffic laws, distracted driving, improper lane change, speeding, failure to obey traffic laws and control devices, and more.

However, operation safe driver week isn’t monitoring for sleep apnea which greatly contributes to distracted driving. In fact, sleep apnea may be responsible for 1 in 5 (20%) of all fatal semi truck accidents.

Why is Sleep Apnea Dangerous?

Sleep apnea is a condition in which you suddenly stop breathing in your sleep either due to blockages in your airways, such as the soft tissue of your throat collapsing during rest or when your brain fails to correctly send breathing signals.

You might not wake up when experiencing an apnea as your breathing stops, but your body will be alert as your chest contracts in order to fight for the oxygen it needs. As a result, you don’t get properly rested.

Many people don’t know if they have sleep apnea unless their partner tells them they snore loudly or they film themselves sleeping. Other symptoms besides severe snoring include:

  • Waking with a headache
  • Irritability or mood swings
  • Confusion or trouble concentrating
  • Excessive fatigue
  • Waking up while gasping or choking

All of which can lead to distracted driving and cause accidents. Plus, if you don’t catch sleep apnea it could contribute to health conditions that are even more dangerous such as, diabetes, obesity, heart attacks, heart disease, stroke, and more.

But truckers don’t have time to spend expensive nights in sleep clinics, so how can they take a sleep test to screen for their risk of sleep apnea? Easily, from the comfort of their own bed with an at home test.

After using the comfortable, easy-to-use test for one night, ship it back to us and a qualified clinician will analyze your results. If you’re at risk for sleep apnea your doctor will be contacted to discuss treatment options.

Driver packs his CPAP during Operation Safe Driver week The most effective treatment method involves the use of a CPAP machine to continuously deliver the oxygen your body needs while you rest. If having a CPAP seems difficult in your rig, or expensive, think again. Your CPAP be covered through insurance and shipped directly to your home.

There are many compact, travel options that are battery operated and come with DC chargers so they can be used anywhere.

Happy National Safe Driver Week

It’s time to be on your best driving behavior this week, truckers! Officers are out watching and waiting to see if you’re driving distracted. However, don’t left safety only be a weeklong event. Make the roads safer for yourself and all other drivers by taking the steps to stop sleep apnea if you’re at risk.
