COPD Awareness Month

Virtually everyone has at least heard of “COPD.” Many people are familiar with this term, but just what exactly is COPD? Millions of Americans are battling this condition and November is COPD Awareness Month. It is also the third leading cause of death in America. Do you or someone you know have symptoms that could potentially be the early stages? It is a serious diagnosis, but luckily there are several effective methods of treatment.   We would like to shed some light on COPD and offer some solutions you may have not been aware of.

What is COPD?

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a lung condition that constricts the airway and severely reduces airflow. It can also be classified into two areas of either chronic bronchitis or emphysema. The severity of COPD typically progresses over time, but luckily advancements in treatment have made living with it much more manageable. Common Causes

Smoking is the leading cause of COPD, but it is not the only culprit. Air Pollution, fumes from chemicals, or dust can also be a leading factor. As with anything else, genetics also play a large role in the development of the disease.  Some side effects include a chronic cough, shortness of breath, and diminished lung capacity. There is no cure for COPD, but treatment and lifestyle changes can prohibit the progression to later stages. In an addition to medicinal avenues, alternative approaches can be effective such as breathing exercises. Learn more at https://aeroflowinc.com/breathing-exercises-for-those-suffering-from-copd/

What you can do

In the early stages of COPD, less invasive forms of treatment can be utilized with breathing medications via an inhaler or nebulizer. Some medications such as Albuterol or Duoneb relax airway tissues allowing the patient to breath easier without constriction. Both of these methods can calm a flare up or episode, but in the later stages, other measures must be put in place such as oxygen therapy or a ventilator. Have you or your spouse’s physician recently prescribed any of this equipment to you?
