Anyone who has a job where a lot of sitting is involved can identify with what truck drivers may think about when they try to get healthier though they are on the road for so many hours. There are some things that can be done to make it easier that just take a little thought and a little effort. The trucking industry is trying to make this easier as well.
We may as well address food choices first. Eating healthier is a great way to improve health and fitness for all of us, but it can be a challenge for those who are on the road so often. This is where mindfulness and option awareness come in. Many fast food restaurants offer healthier choices these days; all you have to do is choose them instead of the less healthy options. For example, replace French fries with a salad, or baked potato chips instead of regular potato chips. The biggest challenge here is making the decision to eat better.
Earlier when I mentioned the trucking industry is trying to make it easier for truckers to improve fitness, I was referring to truck stops that now offer athletic facilities. I read about this and it is a wonder this has not happened sooner. Granted, not every truck stop is equipped, but that is no reason why a truck driver cannot choose to walk at least 15 minutes. The benefits are more than just the affect on the waste line. Walking is a great way to relieve stress and improve sleep.
Speaking of sleep, truckers should try creating a sleep routine. Keeping to this routine will help improve sleep, which will in turn reduce stress, increase energy needed to get where they need to go, and once they get there they still have the motivation to go on that walk. Healthy sleep will improve overall health so truck drivers can enjoy the little time they have to be home with the family.
If your career involves travelling in a truck for long periods of time, take it upon yourself to make healthy choices. It is too easy to be sedentary and later deal with health problems you could have prevented by making better decisions for your health. Your loved ones will thank you.
