Once you and your significant other decide the time is right to bring a little bundle of joy into your life, you are going to be ready to get the show on the road! When you are trying to conceive months can seem like years and having trouble conceiving can become extremely frustrating.
Below are some natural ways you can help to boost your fertility:
Healthy Diet– A Harvard Medical study found that eating certain foods and avoiding others can help regulate ovulation. Walter Willet, M.D., a professor of nutrition at Harvard School of Public Health recommends limiting consumption of sugary sodas and fruit drinks, starches, red meat, and trans fat. Dr. Willet explains the direct correlation between blood sugar/insulin spikes and ovulatory infertility. The study revealed that a staggering 92% of women who had the highest glycemic load suffered from ovulation related infertility. Therefore, it may be a good idea to say goodbye to those bagels, muffins, and all the many other refined carbohydrates. Try incorporating whole grains, a wide variety of fiber rich fruits and veggies, and foods containing essential fats like fish.
Being significantly overweight or underweight can make you less fertile. An article written by the bump states that women who are underweight with a body mass index (BMI) less than 19kg/M2 take 4 times as long to get pregnant than women who have a BMI within the healthy range of 19-24kg/M2. In contrast, fat cells can affect estrogen production, which can prevent or disrupt normal ovulation making it more difficult for overweight women to conceive.
Limit caffeine and alcohol consumption
Many studies on the affects of alcohol intake on fertility have produced contradictory results. One Swedish study found that women who consumed two or more alcoholic beverages a day decreased their fertility rate upwards of 60 percent. That being said, most experts agree that moderate consumption of caffeine and alcohol will not adversely affect your fertility. It is recommend that you limit your caffeine consumption to under 200mg a day.
It is smart to go ahead and start taking a pre-natal vitamin prior to conception. The healthier you are the more likely you are to conceive. Taking a pre-natal vitamin that contains folic acid has been proven to reduce the risk of fetal defects that may develop within the very first weeks of pregnancy.
The tips listed above are just a few ways you can try and naturally boost fertility. Every woman’s body is different so what works for one woman might not work for the other. If you are having trouble conceiving it is important you meet with your healthcare provider to try and determine the cause.
