Should I Get a Single or Double Breast Pump?

Should I Get a Single or Double Breast Pump?

Trying to figure out what type breast pump to use can be quite difficult. There are a number of things to consider when choosing the right type. However, remember that the type of pump that worked for someone you know, may not work for you. Basically, breast pumps fall into to two wide categories: manual pumps and electric. Manual pumps, of course, require some physical effort on the users end, compared to electric pumps that automatically pump milk from the breast.

Whether new mothers should buy or rent a breast pump depends on your particular situation. That is something that only you and your insurance provider can determine. For most moms, purchasing a breast pump seems the best option, but if you intend to only use it for a brief period, then renting may be your best option. Another factor to consider is performance.

There are single and double breast pumps. Which one to choose and which type pump is best for you again depends on your personal preferences. You may also want to consult with your doctor or another qualified health professional when you have difficulty deciding what type breast pump to use. If you answer yes to any of the questions below, you may probably need a double breast pump.

  1. Do you intend to store milk?
  2. Do you work away from home?
  3. Will you spend a considerable amount of time away from your baby?
  4. If while single breast pumping, does one breast leak while the other is being pumped?
  5. Do you breastfeed and still use a pump?
  6. Do you only have a limited amount of time to pump?

Also, check out the following questions. If you answer yes to any of these, you will most likely use a single breast pump.

  1. Do you intend to breastfeed and pump simultaneously?
  2. Do you breastfeed often?
  3. Are you or will you be a stay-at-home mom?
  4. Do you breast pump occasionally?

A final note: make sure when choosing a breast pump that the breast-shield is the correct size for you. Most pumps come with a one-size shield. When deciding to purchase a pump, check if it comes with different sized shields. This could make a huge difference in how comfortable the breast pump is, and be sure you meet with your doctor to find out what type breast pump is the best fit for you.
