Power Wheelchair Safety

Power Wheelchair Safety

Before utilizing your power wheelchair, it is important that you make sure to explore the devices’ manual page by page so that you can begin to understand each part of your new wheelchair.  Manual’s are available online for your review on Pride and Drive’s websites, and  one copy does come with the chair as well.

Remember to also take the time to review specifics with the Aeroflow Healthcare Mobility Specialist while he or she is in your home on delivery day. The delivery will give you hands-on training on the safe operation of your power wheelchair in your home. Our Specialist will work with you and make any adjustments necessary to ensure you are completely comfortable and confident in using your power chair throughout the rooms within your home. Aeroflow’s Product Specialist will also instruct and demonstrate how to turn the power off when the device is not in use.

For safety reasons it is very important that you keep the power off when transferring to and from the power wheelchair, and whenever you are re-charging the battery. It is highly recommended that prior to operation you should first fasten the seat belt. The seat belt is necessary for safe power wheelchair use and is intended to protect you against accidental falls and serious injury.

Your power wheelchair battery should remain fully charged at all times. Aeroflow strongly recommends charging the battery every night, especially if you use your chair continuously throughout the day. The power chairs from both Pride and Drive are sturdy enough for outdoor use. If you choose to experience your mobility outside, operate your power chair only on flat, smooth-surfaces such as paved pedestrian walks, and avoid heavily trafficked roadways and intersections. Even if you use a safety flag so others can more clearly see you, it is best never to take your power wheelchair outside when visibility is poor, at night, or during bad weather.

Keep your motorized chair in safe, good working condition with preventive maintenance. Do your part to ensure that your power chair stays clean, dry, and free from dust buildup. Make using your chair a routine, it is important to keep the chair regularly running; without this regular use the batteries and life of the chair will decline much more quickly. For anything requiring extensive repair, contact the manufacturer, do not work on your chair yourself. Pride and Drive both have warranty options for many parts of the chair, so it is important to contact the manufacturer right when you are seeing issues with the chair.

If you have any questions regarding power wheelchair safety, don’t hesitate to give Aeroflow Healthcare a call at 888-345-1780. One of  our Patient Care Representatives will be happy to answer any questions or concerns that you may have.
