If you think that being in a power chair is going to be the end of your athletic career, your wrong! Power chair Football, also known as Power soccer is a competitive team sport for people with disabilities who use power wheelchairs. The game is played in a gymnasium on a regulation basketball court. Two teams of four players use power chairs equipped with footguards to attack, defend and spin-kick a football in an attempt to score goals.
Power soccer was first played in France in the 1970’s and soon spread across the globe which spurred the creation of the FIPFA (Federation International Power Football Association). The players are required to use a power chair with 4 or more wheels with a maximum speed of 6.2mph. The referees are required to inspect the players’ speed before each match and make sure they have the necessary foot guard and lap belt. The popularity of power soccer has led to a world cup which was first held in Tokyo in 2007 and is held every four years in a different location.
