As we have spoken about in previous blogs, Negative Pressure Wound Therapy is an excellent technique for healing wounds more quickly. However, not only can it be an effective tool clinically, but it can also be effective from a monetary standpoint as well.
In April of this year, doctors Tomasz Banasiewics, Bartosz Cybulka, Ameen Iqbal, Wojciech Francuzik, Jorg Linder and Michal Drews performed a study on the effectiveness of NPWT as well as the cost benefits as well.
They studied two groups of people who had an injury which left their abdomen exposed. From their findings, those who used NPWT as a means of recovery had an average stay in the ICU of 13 days; those who did not were in ICU for 22 days.
Along with this, the groups using NPWT only needed to use antibiotics for 16 days compared to 28 days for those who did not use NPWT.
As a matter of dollars and cents, the hospitals were able to see that in cases such as this, it costs nearly half as much to save a patient’s life using NPWT than without (31,000E to 17,000E).
They were also able to see that starting negative pressure wound therapy within 5 days of admittance to the hospital could end up saving the patient nearly 2000E.
That being said, if you or anyone you know has a wound that needs to be healed, we offer the most advanced negative pressure wound therapy equipment available.
We have two top of the line NPWT devices from Medela: The Invia and The Advance. Both of these devices were designed professionally, but with patient use in mind as well.
