November is bladder health awareness month

Bladder Health Awareness Month is the perfect time to talk about how you can ensure a healthy bladder along with what you can do to support those who may be experiencing bladder challenges.

Bladder Health Problems

There are 2 common health problems that can occur with the bladder: urinary incontinence and overactive bladder (OAB). There are more than 25 million people in the U.S. who are living with urinary incontinence. This can be experienced as leaking urine while coughing or sneezing to strong urges to empty the bladder almost immediately. It is important to seek support from your doctor, who can recommend simple lifestyle changes to help mitigate the problem in most circumstances.

Overactive Bladder Symptoms

For those with overactive bladder, there is a problem with either storing urine or emptying the bladder of urine when it is full. This results in frequent, sudden urges to use the restroom and can end in a complete emptying of the bladder at the most embarrassing times. It is important to note that OAB is not a disease, but rather a set of symptoms that is shared by as many as 33 million adults in the U.S.

Tips for Maintaining a Healthy Bladder

It is never too late to start working towards better bladder health, even if you aren’t suffering from urinary incontinence or overactive bladder.

  • Drink at least 8 cups of water per day. This will help to ensure that your body is not dehydrated and that you are flushing out waste on a regular basis.
  • Reduce the amount of caffeinated drinks like coffee, soda, or tea along with alcoholic drinks you consume on a regular basis. These kinds of drinks are known to irritate the bladder and can lead to leakage.
  • Maintain good bathroom habits. It is normal to use the restroom at least 4 to 8 times during the day, and up to 2 times at night.
  • Women should be sure to properly sit on the toilet to urinate rather than hover over the seat. This allows for complete emptying of the bladder.
  • When using the restroom, be sure to take your time as opposed to rushing.

Consider Incontinence Products

Many adults may decide that diapers are the best way to avoid embarrassing accidents. Aeroflow makes it possible to make your purchases online in the most discreet way possible. You can get diapers through Medicaid or with cash and have your diapers delivered to your home whenever you need them.

Don’t Wait for Symptoms to Worsen

If you believe that you are having problems with your bladder health, it is important to speak to a doctor sooner rather than later. Bladder problems can lead to infections but can also be a sign of other health concerns including an enlarged prostate. Your doctor will be able to guide you through making simple lifestyle changes or even recommending health aids like adult diapers to make your day to day life much easier to live with.
