You’ve gotten your brand new power wheelchair and you are ready to let it loose around the house. However, before you do, you may want to take some time and sit down with a loved one and discus how to make your house more power wheelchair friendly. We have a few tips to consider when thinking about navigating your house with your brands new mobility device.
Clear Pathways: Having clear, wide pathways will make driving your power wheelchair around the house easier and more comfortable. Avoiding loose rugs, tight corners, coffee tables, end tables and non-stable furniture on your regular routes will help make household navigation a breeze. Adding additional lighting for the nights and evenings may be a good idea as well.
Exits: Make sure that all of your houses entrances and exits are wheelchair friendly if they aren’t already. Using ramps instead of steps and making sure all exits are clear of debris is a good start for this. When your chair has a clean entry and exit, it will work more smoothly and be less likely to track mud, dirt or other unwanted elements indoors.
Rearrange due to height: If you cook often from the comfort of your chair, you may want to move your most utilized tools to a level that you can reach from the comfort of your chair. The same can be said for other household tasks that you do on a daily basis. It is all about your ease and comfort at this point.
