How to Combat Asthma in the Winter

So as we head into the heart of winter, we also head into the heart of cold and flu season. If you have Asthma, this could be an especially stressful time because of how asthma can be affected by the flu, cold weather, and colds. Here are some tips for keeping your asthma at bay this winter.

Stay on a Routine: Use your nebulizer every morning – no matter what. Routinely dosing on your asthma medicine will help start your body off correctly every morning and reduce the risks of having an attack during the day.

Take care of yourself: Never underestimate the value of taking care of yourself. That means getting 8 hours of sleep per night, hydrating and eating healthily. I know these can be difficult during the holidays, but if you take care of yourself, you’re less likely to get a cold or upper respiratory infection which could affect your asthma.

Bundle Up: When going outside, be sure to bundle up when the temperature drops. If you wear something as simple as a scarf or facial wrap, it can help to warm the air before it enters your lungs, therefore lessening your risk of an attack.

Exercise Indoors: If you need to exercise, try going inside vs outside. An indoor lap pool, treadmills, and weight machines can be greatly utilized this winter.
