If you have Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), the cold weather can put an extra strain on your body for several reasons.
On a very basic level, your body tries to maintain similar and neutral conditions for optimal functionality. One of the main conditions that it works on is body temperature. When you are cold, your body shivers to warm itself up, but this takes more energy than usual and makes your body more susceptible to illness since it is working over time.
Cold air is also harder to breathe and can constrict airways. If you are suffering from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, this type of weather can exacerbate the problem therefore making it more difficult for you to breathe. If you do go outside, we highly suggest wearing warm clothes, even wearing a scarf or light wrapping around your nose and mouth.
Winter weather also means flu and cold season. Any other type of upper respiratory infection can only complicate COPD.
That being said, we want you to be prepared for the cold weather. If you haven’t already, we highly suggested that you are sure to be stocked up on oxygen.
