Breastpump Rental

As you begin making breastfeeding decisions you will learn that you have many options for acquiring a breastpump.  Through the Affordable Care Act, passed in 2010, you could be eligible for a free breastpump through your insurance, or, you can buy a breastpump out of pocket from a retail location or rent a breastpump.  Whether you need a breastpump rental or an insurance breastpump will largely depend on your breastfeeding needs.  Let’s explore breastpump rentals and see if one could be right for you.

Do I need a breastpump rental?

Breastpump rentals are ideal for moms with medical conditions and/or have a premature infant.  These breastpumps are normally hospital-grade pumps that are designed to have multiple users and are marketed towards moms who need the breastpump for a short period of time.  If you have a medical condition that is preventing you from direct breastfeeding and/or have a premature infant, a breastpump rental could be the best option for your breastfeeding needs.

The Medela Symphony® Preemie+™ Breastpump is designed specifically for moms with premature infants.  This breastpump rental is designed to get pump dependant moms started breastpumping and has been clinically shown to provide significantly greater milk output in fewer minutes pumping; ideal for establishing and maintaining a healthy milk supply for premature infants.

What is included in a breastpump rental?

Because breastpump rentals are used by multiple people, you will be responsible for purchasing bottles, breast shields, and tubing.  Personal use breastpumps are designed for one user and come standard with the above parts.

Is a breastpump rental safe?

Yes. Hospital-grade breastpump rentals are designed and constructed to support multiple users and are designed much differently than personal use breastpumps.   Simply put, breastpump rentals are designed to keep the milk separate from the pump.  Some personal use breastpumps have this feature but it is not guaranteed with all breastpumps which is why sharing a personal use breastpump is not recommended.

If you have a medical condition that is keeping you from direct breastfeeding or if you have a premature infant, a breastpump rental could be the right fit for you.  However, if you do not need a hospital-grade breastpump rental, there is no need to pay out of pocket for your breastpump!
