Aging in Place

Aging in Place

As we age, one common fear we face is the possibility of having to rely on others for things that we had previously been able to accomplish on our own. Many adults would favor the opposite of this outcome; to remain at their home of choice for as long as possible. This preference is termed, aging in place.

Aging in place, as defined by the Center for Disease Control, is “the ability to live in one’s home and community safely, independently, and comfortably, regardless of age, income, or ability level.”  According to an article from AARP, 90% of adults who are over the age of 65 say that they would prefer to age in place in their own home instead of living in any type of assisted living facility such as a retirement community or nursing home.

As technology and the ability for aging adults to have access to their everyday necessities grows, the likelihood of adults being able to age in place simultaneously increases. Resources such as The National Aging in Place Council, emergency response systems, transportation services, and more, help aging adults continue to live their normal, everyday lives.

Often times you may think that if you have a mobility or health impairment that your likelihood for aging in place is decreased, however thanks to durable medical equipment suppliers such as Aeroflow Healthcare, this is not always the case.
