Because the health, environmental, and monetary benefits are overwhelmingly positive, more mothers are turning to breastfeeding as the primary source of nutrition for their babies. Along with this, recent healthcare changes in the United States have paved the way to make breastfeeding support more accessible to mothers than ever before!
Under the Affordable Care Act, health insurance plans must provide breastfeeding support for mothers. However, the extent to which breast pumps, breast feeding supplies, and support are offered largely depends on the insurance companies themselves. In this blog series, we will examine the guidelines laid out by several major insurance companies, and how to file for breast pumps through insurance. Of course, if you have any questions, please feel free to contact us over the phone or on the web. We will be happy to assist you in finding the best solution for you and your baby.
In this installment, we will take a brief look at United Healthcare’s approach to breastfeeding support.
-Starting on January 1st of 2014, United Healthcare says they will cover the purchase of personal, double-electric breast pumps.
-They have also stated that United Healthcare members may purchase breast pumps without any shared costs by contacting an approved breast pump supplier within 30 days of the baby’s delivery date.
– The suppliers are allowed to directly issue the breast pump to you and we will then bill United Healthcare for the costs.
– You do not need a prescription when speaking with a supplier like us. However, we may need your doctor’s contact information and your baby’s due date.
– The most affordable option is to go through a supplier directly because you will NOT be reimbursed if you make your breast pump purchases through a retail store.
