The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has guidelines concerning screening for sleep apnea. If a driver goes to their DOT physical and the physician suspects the driver may be at risk for sleep apnea, the doctor may recommend a sleep study.
Common risk factors that the doctor may consider when determining whether or not to recommend a sleep study is as follow:
- body mass index of 33 or greater
- neck circumference greater than 17 inches in men and 16 inches in women
- excessive daytime sleepiness
If you are a driver and concerned you may be screened as needing a sleep study at your next DOT physical, Aeroflow Industrial Clinics offers a free online sleep survey. Pending the results of the sleep screening, if you choose to move forward with an in-home sleep study, an Aeroflow Industrial Clinics representative will work with you to get an order from your physician to take an in-home sleep study.
